John F. Russell is the sports editor and a photographer for the Pilot & Today. He writes a sports column that appears Sundays. He has worked for the newspaper since June 1990.

John has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Colorado and worked at the Longmont Times-Call during college.

John is from Denver. His hobbies include bowling, softball, photography, pinochle and following his two lovely children around.

Steamboat's Sobeck finishes strong at state golf

After shooting a 42 on his first nine, Steamboat sophmore Erik Sobeck found his swing down the stretch. He recorded a birdie and and made par on six other holes to score a 37 on his final nine. He finished with a 79 and is tied with four other golfers in 38th place.

2 Steamboat golfers net aces

Charlotte Fleming knows nothing about the game of golf, but if her mom has anything to say about it she will spend plenty of time on the course. Charlotte has not made her first trip to Las Vegas, but she has been a regular at the Steamboat Golf Club, and her presence has been lucky for her mom, who netted her first hole-in-one Monday on the No. 3 hole at the course.

After years of organizing local mountain bike races, Town Challenge Mountain Bike Race Series Director Gretchen Sehler knows a good challenge, and this week will present one for local riders. Wednesday’s Storm Peak Challenge Hill Climb will test competitors with more than 3,000 vertical feet in seven miles of riding from the bottom of Mount Werner to its top.
